Volume 2 of Failed Princesses is a lot like volume 1. The two leads seem more like friends than potential love interests, though this is marketed as yuri so I expect that will change...eventually. But it hasn't yet. Again, one girl berates the other for her lack of style and tries to make her over so she's more worthy of being friends with, which I don't care for. That happened a lot less in volume 2 than in volume 1, so hopefully that plot device is wearing itself out.This volume had a couple instances of males being sexist towards the girls but it was nice to see they didn't just put up with it. But I did think that physically assaulting a teacher was a little over the top.In volume 2, the girls each have a chance to defend one another against rumors, false accusations, gossip, and sexual harassment. It's nice to see them becoming closer friends, even if nothing else has happened between them at this point.Two side characters are stepping into more prominent roles in volume 2 and the author promises more from them in the next volume. I'm not a fan of unnecessary love triangles where there's a third wheel that no one is romantically interested in, but this trope is rearing its ugly head and I'm not looking forward to seeing it in the spotlight in the future, but here we are. Failed Princesses is becoming a worthwhile yuri series. Indeed, this volume called to mind parallels with Strawberry Panic, a great favorite of mine. Fujishiro seems to be the Shizuma type, a confident force of nature, while Kurokawa is more a Nagisa--quiet, uncertain, but internally strong. The girls are facing complications in their budding relationship as Fujishiro gets suspended for defending Kurokawa from a teacher's anger and a childhood friend of Kurokawa's , Akazawa, becomes a student at the school. There is also a member of Fujishiro's old circle, Izumi, who looks fated to be the mediator of the others. The series is developing good dynamics and I am looking forward to future volumes.
