While the story was okay, it's execution was not. The dialogue/ internal monologues was so clunky and full of useless exposition, that I could barely read it at first. I finally got use to it, but every now and again, I would think to myself, nobody would really talk like that.The second half of the book was overloaded with sex talk. It was as if the author felt that if she didn't work at least one sexual innuendo into every conversation, the reader might forget how hot Aurora and Evie were for each other. Hay we are in a life or death situation, but we should still take the time extchange a few single entendres so we don't forget about all the mind blowing sex we had last night.Almost all of the action took place "off screen". The book would have Aurora getting ready to fight some baddy, then cut to Evie sitting around having another awkward exposition laden conversation about how much Aurora was loved by everybody she ever met, even though she thought they hated her. Not that the reader needed to experience the fights, Aurora was such a bad ass none of her opponents ever stood a chance. In fact Aurora was just awesome at everything. Although I really hated not getting to "see" that cutter jerk get what's coming to him, after what he did, I really would have liked to read him beg for his life.And finally the porthole between the beastshifter's and the human world was unnecessary. It just served to taint the flavor of the book. They idea of fantasy characters, hitting the dance clubs, or picking up a pizza didn't seem to fit the mood of the book. Aurora's Angel's is a beautifully rendered fantasy romance. Fantasy is a difficult genre to write convincingly regardless of the queer romance. This novel simultaneous builds complex words, two appealing main characters and a slow burn (to be expected with a 800+ page effort)1: The World: Shapeshifters and an overdone cliche but Emily Noon makes them believable again - especially the contrast between avian society and shifter society. The characters explain the process of shifting and what it means. Its not a 'super power' per se its simply a part of life.2) The Characters: Aurora and Evie are brought to life fully and with flaws, insecurities and pain. However, this book stays away from a Twilight brooding fest.3) Romance: Honestly I was totally invested in the characters before any romance but its nicely done and respectful of power, situation and different backgrounds.4) Details: From the first page you learn the consequences of shifting and society hostilities. There are dark themes but they aren't gratuitous or graphicDon't be intimidated by the length - this is a very easy read and even though the tag line is 'dark fantasy' there are plenty of light and touching moments.
