Ebook About Being a fugitive in the old west shouldn’t be this much fun.The year is 1860. Robby Riverton is a rising star on the New York stage. But he witnesses a murder by a famous crime boss and is forced to go on the run--all the way to Santa Fe. When he still hasn't ditched his pursuers, he disguises himself as a mail order bride he meets on the wagon train. Caught between gangsters that want to kill him, and the crazy, uncouth family of his "intended", Robby's only ally is a lazy sheriff who sees exactly who Robby is -- and can't resist him.Trace Crabtree took the job as sheriff of Flat Bottom because there was never a thing going on. And then Robby Riverton showed up. Disguised as a woman. And betrothed to Trace’s brother. If that wasn’t complication enough, Trace had to find the man as appealing as blueberry pie. He urges Robby to stay undercover until the danger has passed. But a few weeks of having Robby-Rowena at the ranch, and the Crabtree family will never be the same again.Book Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride Review :
What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with a piece of Americana? Eli Easton’s “Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride”, written in the manner of an old-time Western, seemed a perfect fit. Start to finish, it left a smile on my face and easily earned five stars for its sheer fun-factor. And it did more. When Robby, a New York City actor, witnesses a mob boss commit murder, he catches the first stage coach west. Mobsters purse. Through a series of humorous twists, Robbie takes on the persona of Rowena Fairchild, a mail-order bride to Clovis, adult son of the peculiar Crabtree clan. They live in outside Santa Fe.Trace Crabtree, Clovis’ older brother, was injured as an Army sharpshooter, and became town Sherriff upon his return. While the Crabtree family immediately accepts Robby as Rowena, Trace recognizes him from a US Marshall’s poster indicating Robby is wanted, as witness to the murder.Robby and Trace decide it is safest to wait out the mob boys at the Crabtree ranch, though it means Robby will remain Rowena and deceive the family. With little to do, Rowena initiates a positive change in the family’s peculiar habits, which were created through old pains. And the fun begins in earnest. What ensues is one of the best written farces I’ve read in a long, long time. It’s easy to detect how this adorable piece worked its magic.Firstly, Easton creates a wickedly funny set of supporting characters, people mistaken as uncouth because of their eccentricities, which hide true grit. (Sorry, I was itching to use the phrase.) Unlike other novels with a huge array of minor characters, these folks shine, yet never take focus off the romance, or the ever-looming shootout.Secondly, the book deals credibly with gay men’s plight in that era, without any interference in the plot’s arc. Instead, readers have a galloping sense of dread, as the big conclusion approaches. Even if Robby and Trace survive, neither can see a way to have their happily-ever-after.When romance and fear, violence and trust are contrasted, the tension is palpable. And yet the story remains light-hearted as well. It’s a terrific prescription for surviving dangerous times.Because Robby, and his persona of Rowena, have distinct personalities, Easton explores how gender and role interact with issues like courage and trust. Yet these are so finely woven into the fabric of her story, readers may not realize how subtly they have been lead to consider new concepts. Likewise, Rowena alters the perceptions of those she encounters, including Robbie, himself. Heavy stuff presented with nimble touch. And finally, Easton’s beautiful language conveys substance with utmost simplicity. For example, “The moment felt like a heavy thing, a step out of time, one that couldn’t last and was all the more precious for it.”So, as night falls, and early firecrackers make my cat scurry to take cover, I sit back sated by “Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride,” a meal of truly extraordinary fiction. When actor Robby Riverton finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnesses a murder, he realizes that the only course of action is to get out of town quick. So he books passage on a wagon train headed West to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Unfortunately, the killers have caught up to him, and they refuse to take a chance by leaving a witness alive. So, thinking fast, he quickly changes into a dress, bonnet and makeup, and voila! Rowena is born!Eventually, Robby/Rowena arrives at a large ranch owned by the Crabtree family, where she is expected to take her place as the fiancee of Pa Crabtree's son Clovis. Too bad Robby has the hots for Clovis' brother Trace instead!I have to say that I am not generally a fan of historical romance. But this one won me over starting with the cover. How can anyone not laugh at that image? And the story, with shades of Some Like It Hot and Tootsie, kept me chuckling, as did Robby/Rowena and the whole crazy Crabtree family. A family that may come off as boorish and uncouth, but will do anything to help and protect their own! This book is a complete novel. There are no cliffhangers and it is not part of a series. It does have a happy ever after ending and an epilogue that will leave you cheering. Enjoy!
