This book is better than the first in this series, but still leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to being consistent and wrapping up storylines. You really do need to read the first book in this series before reading this book. Characters will make a lot more sense to the reader because the author doesn't give a "Cliff Notes" version of the previous story to catch you up. I actually forgot who "Brandon" was. (He was introduced in the first book.) When he appeared in this book, I couldn't figure out who he was and his connection to anyone else until several chapters later. The author tends to include a lot of peripheral information/storylines for the reader but then doesn't clean it all up before the end of the book. What happened to the children? What happened to Konstantin? Did Buck and Joey make it? Did they adopt Kon? Was the sex trafficking ring stopped? Did Buck ever restore the vintage cars or expand his shop? This author, again, ended the book a few chapters short, it felt like to me. I read the first book in this series a while ago (when it was the Accidental Roots series) and I was looking for a series to binge and stumbled back on this book. I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the rest of the books in the series. I wish I had re-read book one first as there are several references to the events of that book here and I only vaguely recalled them. It’s not necessary in order to enjoy this book but I’m one of those people!The author does a great job with character development and I felt like I knew and could really understand Joey and Buck. As we learn more and more about Buck my heart just broke for him. At times Joey annoyed me with some TSTL moves, especially after knowing Adam was involved but the way the story worked it paid off.The ending is a sweet HFN and hopefully we’ll see their relationship flourish as the series continues. We saw quite a bit of Adam and Micah in this one so I am hoping that pattern continues.
