Ebook About
Introverted scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has spent the last few months watching his lover, Griffin Flaherty, come to terms with the rejection of his adoptive family. So when an urgent telegram from Christine summons them to Egypt, Whyborne is reluctant to risk the fragile peace they’ve established. Until, that is, a man who seems as much animal as human tries to murder Whyborne in the museum.Amidst the ancient ruins of the pharaohs, they must join Christine and face betrayal, murder, and a legendary sorceress risen from the dead. In the forge of the desert heat, the trio will either face their fears and stand together—or shatter the bonds between them forever.Necropolis is the fourth book in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America.

Book Necropolis (Whyborne & Griffin Book 4) Review :

"The calm of certainty settled over me, and all other thoughts dropped away one at a time. The million stars above echoed the million grains of sand beneath my feet. The whisper of my breath was the soft sigh of the wind; the blood moving invisible through my veins the echo of underground rivers hidden within the earth. I was the world, and the world was me. And my will would shape it."After what, for me, was a slow start, the fourth installment of Jordan L. Hawk's Whyborne and Griffin series, Necropolis, quickly kicks into high gear for a stirring thrill ride through the deserts of Egypt. Necropolis reunites our trio of heroes, antiquities scholar and dabbling conjurer, Dr. Percival Whyborne, his lover, former Pinkerton detective, Griffin Faherty, and archeologist Dr. Christine Putnam, as they investigate gruesome murders, secret cults, and the possibility of a supernatural threat. Our heroes are joined by Christine's assistant, Iskander Barnett, and by an irascible, scene-stealing, hat chewing, neck-nibbling camel named Daisy.Perhaps it is because the setting was so well conveyed in this installment, but Necropolis has made me look forward to the next books in this series after having stopped reading over a year ago. There wasn't anything objectively wrong with the third book, it's just that it didn't feel good after I'd finished it. It didn't leave me wanting to go back to the Widdershins world. I'm glad that I did, though, as not only is Necropolis wonderfully paced, it also expands on the depth of passion between Whyborne and Griffin and let's both characters grow. This book has left me feeling much better about the series - enthusiastic enough, in fact, to want to share one more quote, from Whyborne to Griffin during a particularly stressful scene:“I’m asking you to fight back.” I grabbed his shoulders again, and this time he didn’t pull away. The tears spilled over onto his cheeks, and each one seared my heart. “And maybe I will die, maybe we all will, but I’d rather perish at your side than—than go home without you. You’re the world to me.”Necropolis is a great ride, and I hope you enjoy it.
This story takes Whyborne out of his comfort zone (if Widdershins can be called that) and into a new venue when he's summoned to Egypt posthaste by Christine Putnam. Griffin goes along, of course, because he isn't going to let Whyborne out of his sight for any length of time, not with the way he gets himself into dangerous situations. What they find there is more of the puzzle of the pharoah whose tomb Christine is excavating, and a new enemy in the form of Nitocris, queen of the ghuls. As another reviewer has noted, this story is very reminiscent of the 1999 Movie The Mummy, especially in the person of the shardah-iin, a group of desert dwellers raised to fight Nitocris. There's plenty of desert description to drive that thought home, also, as well as some comic action with timid Whyborne and camels and f other deserty things to make him complain, as well as one surprisingly erotic love scene taking place during a sandstorm. There are two subplots. Now that Griffin has been disowned by his family because he refuses to give up Whyborne, he begins a search for the brothers from whom he was separated on the Children's Train sent west. Because of these two incidents, Whyborne worries that if Griffin does find his brothers, they may ask him to make a choice, also, and he's more determined than ever to prove he's worthy of the sacrifice while fearing Griffin may not wish to do so a second time. As well as this family problem, Christine's estranged sister shows up and faithful readers will see what's coming a mile away. There's also some romance for Christine.A hint of things to come: Whyborne admits he's a sorcerer and he also learns the Dweller in the Deep, from "Stormhaven" left something of itself inside him when they bonded; whenever his emotions are in full force...things happen.A good entry in the series, with the change of scenery making for a different kind of story and the expectation of more differences in the types of menace now that Whyborne admits to his mystical powers. This novel was purchased by the reviewer and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.
